Your Pool Filter: The Hardest-Working Employee Nobody Thinks About!

Here's something every Brevard County pool owner should know: You can have perfectly balanced chemicals and STILL have a cloudy swimming pool!

          How is that possible?

Simple. Your pool filter might not be doing its job!

Think about it. Your filter works day after day, trapping dirt, pollen, leaves, dead algae, and all the other unwanted visitors that find their way into your swimming pool.

And here in Brevard County, Mother Nature certainly knows how to keep our filters busy!

With October bringing changing weather patterns, gusty winds, and occasional storms, your filtration system can face some serious challenges.

What Does Your Pool Filter Actually Do?

Your pool filter has one primary responsibility:

remove unwanted particles from the water as it circulates through the system.

While chlorine helps sanitize your pool, the filter physically removes suspended debris.

          They work together.

Without adequate filtration, your swimming pool can become cloudy, circulation can suffer, and maintaining proper water quality becomes more difficult.

It's like washing your dishes with dirty water.

Eventually, something's going to look pretty nasty!

Five Warning Signs Your Filter Needs Attention

           Your pool water looks cloudy.

If your chemicals are properly balanced but the water remains cloudy, poor filtration could be contributing to the problem.

Your filter pressure is unusually high.

As filters collect dirt and debris, resistance to water flow increases. A common guideline is to clean the filter when pressure rises approximately 8–10 PSI above its normal clean operating pressure, although manufacturer recommendations vary.

Water circulation seems weaker than normal.

If your return jets aren't pushing water as strongly as they usually do, something may be restricting circulation.
This could involve the filter, skimmer baskets, pump basket, or another equipment issue.

           Your filter cartridges are deteriorating.

Over time, cartridge pleats can become damaged, flattened, or difficult to clean.
Eventually, replacement becomes necessary.

Your pool keeps getting dirty unusually quickly.

If debris remains suspended or water clarity doesn't improve after proper cleaning and chemical treatment, your filtration system deserves a closer look.

Here's Something Many Homeowners Don't Realize

A dirty filter doesn't necessarily mean you need a new filter.

Sometimes a thorough cleaning is all that's required.

However, cleaning a damaged or worn-out cartridge won't restore its original performance.

          That's why regular inspection matters.

At Premier Coastal Pool Services, we routinely clean filters approximately every three to four weeks as part of our maintenance program, adjusting when conditions require additional attention.

We also inspect pool equipment during weekly service.

          This Week's Pool Tip

Take a look at your pool's filter pressure gauge!

When your filter has just been cleaned, record its normal pressure reading with the pump operating at its usual speed.

          Check it periodically.

If the pressure rises significantly above that baseline, it's time to investigate.

Also, after windy weather, check your skimmer and pump baskets for accumulated debris.

          Important:

Always shut off the pump before servicing equipment, and never open a pressurized

filter tank. Follow the manufacturer's pressure-release instructions or have a qualified professional handle the work.

Why Professional Weekly Maintenance Matters

At Premier Coastal Pool Services, we don't believe maintaining a swimming pool means simply throwing chemicals into the water and hoping for the best.

          Our regular service includes:

           Weekly brushing, skimming, and vacuuming.

           Water testing and chemical balancing.

           Routine filter cleaning and inspection.

           Weekly equipment inspections.

           Monitoring water circulation and filtration.

Phosphate treatment and other necessary water chemistry adjustments.

           Our goal is simple:

Keep your pool clean, clear, properly balanced, and ready whenever you are!

KNOW SOMEONE WITH A CLOUDY POOL?

If you know a Brevard County homeowner who's constantly fighting cloudy water, weak

If you're in Brevard County and your salt pool suddenly needs chlorine all the time, give us a call.

Your Salt Cell Worked Hard All Summer. Is It Still Doing Its Job?

We’ve talked recently about rain, filters, and debris, so this week we’re turning our attention to a piece of equipment many Brevard County pool owners rarely think about until something goes wrong:

          the salt cell.

Even though we're heading into October, Florida hasn't exactly received the fall-weather memo. The National Weather Service in Melbourne is forecasting highs in the upper 80s for Brevard this week, with shower and thunderstorm chances returning Wednesday through Friday. National Weather Service That means salt systems are still working hard.

A Salt Pool Still Needs Chlorine

One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is,

“I have a saltwater pool, so I don't use chlorine.”

          Actually, you do.

Your salt system uses the salt dissolved in the pool water to generate chlorine. The

          salt cell

is the component responsible for making that happen.

When it's working correctly, it's a great system. When it isn't, your pool can start losing its sanitizer protection—and algae doesn't send an appointment request before showing up.

Signs Your Salt Cell May Need Attention

Watch for a pool that suddenly struggles to maintain chlorine even though the system appears to be running. Warning lights on the salt system, unusual salt readings, visible scaling on the cell, or having to supplement the pool repeatedly with chlorine can also indicate that something needs to be checked.

And here's an important point: a green light doesn't always mean everything is perfect.

The system may appear operational while the cell's chlorine production has declined.

Don't Just Turn It Up to 100%

When chlorine gets low, the temptation is to crank the salt system all the way up.

That may temporarily help in some situations, but it doesn't answer the more important question:

Why isn't the pool maintaining chlorine?

The cell could need cleaning. The salt level could be incorrect. Water chemistry or stabilizer could be affecting chlorine performance. Circulation could be poor. Or an aging cell simply may not be producing what it once did.

That's why testing and inspection matter.

Recent National Weather Service forecasts for the Melbourne/Brevard area have continued to show temperatures around the upper 80s to low 90s along with recurring showers and storms—exactly the combination that can make pool chemistry difficult to maintain.

So this week's tip is about something we're seeing firsthand: what all that rain can do to

          Rainwater Isn't Free Pool Water

When we get repeated heavy rain, your pool can fill up quickly. Unfortunately, that extra water doesn't arrive properly balanced and sanitized.

Rain can dilute the chemicals already in the pool. Meanwhile, Florida heat, sunlight, organic debris, and swimmers continue putting demands on your sanitizer.

The result? A pool that looked beautiful a few days ago can suddenly become cloudy or

That's one reason simply looking at the water isn't enough.

Don't Automatically Dump Chlorine Into It

After several days of rain, homeowners sometimes see their chlorine reading drop andimmediately start adding chemicals.

But chlorine is only part of the equation.

The pool's pH, alkalinity, stabilizer, sanitizer level, circulation, filtration, and overall water balance all work together. Adding chemicals without testing first can create another problem while you're trying to solve the first one.

After a major rain event, check the pool's water level.

If it gets too high, the skimmer may not operate as effectively as it normally does. But don't randomly drain large amounts of water from a pool either. If you're unsure what needs to be done, call a professional.

Have the chemistry checked, make sure circulation is strong, empty overloaded baskets, and watch for the first signs of cloudiness or algae.

Is Your Pool Losing Water—or Do You Have a Leak?

October is arriving, but Brevard County’s pools are not ready for a vacation yet. The National Weather Service in Melbourne is forecasting a high near 90°F today, with significant rain and thunderstorm chances continuing through much of the week. Historically, Melbourne’s transition into the dry season occurs around

Every swimming pool loses some water naturally. Sunshine, warm temperatures, wind, splashing, and evaporation all contribute. But if you're constantly standing beside the pool with a garden hose thinking,

          Evaporation or Leak?

A small amount of water loss can be completely normal. A noticeable or persistent drop deserves attention.

Start looking for clues: Are you adding water much more frequently than usual? Is the ground around the equipment unusually wet? Are there bubbles coming from the return jets? Is the pool losing significantly more water when the pump is running? Are there cracks around fittings or the skimmer? Does the water seem to consistently fall to the same level?

None of these automatically proves there's a leak, but they're reasons to take a closer look.

Homeowners can perform a simple preliminary check.

After about 24 hours, compare the two.

Both should experience similar evaporation. If the pool's level drops noticeably more than the water inside the bucket, further leak investigation may be warranted.

          Why Pool Leaks Matter

A leak isn't just about the water bill.

Continually adding fresh water can change your pool chemistry. That means chemicals have to be adjusted more frequently, and untreated leaks can potentially create larger problems around the pool or equipment.

The earlier an abnormal water-loss problem is identified, the better.

Brevard County has been dealing with

Melbourne/Brevard area have continued to show temperatures around the upper 80s to low 90s along with recurring showers and storms—exactly the combination that can make pool chemistry difficult to maintain.

So this week's tip is about something we're seeing firsthand: what all that rain can do to your swimming pool.

The result? A pool that looked beautiful a few days ago can suddenly become cloudy or develop algae.

That's one reason simply looking at the water isn't enough.

Don't Automatically Dump Chlorine Into It

After several days of rain, homeowners sometimes see their chlorine reading drop and immediately start adding chemicals.

But chlorine is only part of the equation.

The pool's pH, alkalinity, stabilizer, sanitizer level, circulation, filtration, and overall water balance all work together. Adding chemicals without testing first can create another problem while you're trying to solve the first one.

          Test first. Treat second.

          Watch Your Water Level, Too

After a major rain event, check the pool's water level.

If it gets too high, the skimmer may not operate as effectively as it normally does. But don't randomly drain large amounts of water from a pool either. If you're unsure what needs to be done, call a professional.

          This Week's Pool Tip

After several days of rain, don't assume clear water means balanced water.

Have the chemistry checked, make sure circulation is strong, empty overloaded baskets, and watch for the first signs of cloudiness or algae.

          er Is Your Pool’s Kidney”

September in Brevard County can still mean hot water, heavy rain, grass clippings, leaves, insects, and plenty of material finding its way into the pool. Your chemicals may get most of the attention, but there’s another piece of equipment working behind the scenes every day:

          your pool filter

          .

Think of your filter as your pool’s kidney. It removes dirt, dead algae, pollen, and other fine debris from the water as it circulates. When that filter gets dirty, clogged, or neglected, circulation suffers—and good chemistry alone may not be enough to keep the pool looking its best.

A common mistake is assuming that if the pump is running, the pool is filtering properly. Not necessarily.

A dirty filter can reduce water flow, increase system pressure, make the pump work harder, and decrease the effectiveness of your overall circulation system. Poor circulation can also create areas of the pool where algae has a much easier time getting established.

How Often Should a Pool Filter Be Cleaned?

There isn't one schedule that's perfect for every pool. The right frequency depends on the filter type, pool usage, landscaping, weather, and how quickly the filter accumulates debris.

, depending on the pool's needs.

We also inspect the equipment because sometimes what appears to be a dirty filter is actually another problem—such as a failing pressure gauge, air entering the system, poor pump performance, or restricted circulation.

          Don't Ignore Your Pressure Gauge

That little gauge sitting on top of your filter isn't decoration.

It helps tell us what's happening inside the filtration system. An unusual increase in pressure can indicate a dirty or restricted filter, while other abnormal readings can point toward circulation or equipment problems.

And if the gauge doesn't work?

Premier Coastal Pool Services Weekly Pool Tip in Melbourne, FL

Keep your pool clean, clear, and balanced with weekly pool maintenance from Premier Coastal Pool Services. Prevent algae, protect equipment, and enjoy year-round swimming in Brevard County, FL.

Why Weekly Pool Service Matters More Than You Think

Living in Brevard County means we get to enjoy our pools nearly year-round—but Florida weather can also be brutal on pool water. Heat, sunshine, afternoon rain, heavy swimming, leaves, pollen, and algae can change your pool chemistry quickly.

That’s why weekly pool maintenance isn’t just about making the water look pretty. It’s about protecting your pool, your equipment, and your investment.

A pool can look crystal clear and still have chemistry problems developing beneath the surface. Chlorine can drop, pH can climb, stabilizer can become too high or too low, phosphates can build up, and filtration problems can go unnoticed. By the time the water turns cloudy or green, the problem may already require considerably more work and expense to correct.

, weekly service means much more than throwing some chlorine in the water and leaving.

During regular service, we monitor and maintain the things that keep your pool healthy: water chemistry, chlorine and pH levels, brushing, skimming, vacuuming as needed, filtration, baskets, circulation, and the general condition of your pool equipment. We also keep an eye out for leaks, equipment problems, algae growth, unusual water loss, and other warning signs before they become expensive surprises.

          Prevention Is Cheaper Than Recovery

One of the biggest mistakes pool owners make is waiting until something goes wrong.

A neglected pool may eventually require additional chemicals, repeated cleanup visits, filter cleaning or replacement, draining and refilling, equipment repairs, or even algae-removal treatments.

Think of weekly pool service like changing the oil in your vehicle. You could skip it for a while and everything might appear fine—but eventually the bill for ignoring routine maintenance can become much larger than the cost of preventing the problem.

Our heat and sunshine cause chlorine to work hard. Heavy rain can dilute chemicals and upset water balance. High swimmer loads add contaminants to the water. Leaves, pollen, landscaping debris, and phosphates can create additional challenges.
